Calculating the age of a living tree without drilling a core (dendrochronology) involves measuring the trunk's diameter. Since trees grow outward in rings, the Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) serves as a proxy for age when combined with a species-specific average growth factor.

How to measure DBH: Wrap a tape measure around the trunk 4.5 feet from the ground to find the circumference, then divide by π (3.1415).
Fast-growing species like Cottonwood and Aspen have low growth factors (around 2.0).
