Overview

A mixing ratio compares the amount of one component relative to another in a mixture. Unlike concentration (which is relative to the total), mixing ratios are often component-to-component. This is fundamental in chemistry for preparing reagents, in engineering for fuel-to-air mixtures, and in atmospheric science where the water vapor mixing ratio defines how much moisture is in the air relative to dry air.

Ratio = Amount 1 / Amount 2 (normalized to 1)
Percentage = (Amount / Total) × 100
Amounts can be mass, volume, or moles, provided they are consistent.
For ratios like 3:2, you need 3 parts of component A and 2 parts of component B.
Always check if your application requires mass ratios, volume ratios, or molar ratios.
A 1:1 ratio results in exactly 50% for each component.
