About this calculator

Overview

Thinset (thin-set mortar) is an adhesive blend of cement, sand, and water-retention agents designed to bond tiles to a substrate. Because the amount of thinset used is entirely dependent on the 'notch' size of your trowel, standard estimates can be unreliable. This calculator helps you determine the physical bag count based on the specific coverage rates provided by your mortar manufacturer.

Pro Tips

In metric regions, a 20kg or 25kg bag is the standard; look for a coverage rate of approximately 4-6 m² per bag for standard 10mm trowels.
Check the manufacturer's chart on the back of the bag; a 1/4" x 1/4" notch uses much less material than a 1/2" x 1/2" notch.
Always round your bag count up. It is significantly better to have half a bag left over than to run out of mortar mid-installation.
