Overview

The Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) is a measure of the number of neutrophil granulocytes present in the blood. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell that fights infection. The ANC is used to determine if a patient has neutropenia, which increases the risk for serious infections.

If your lab provides neutrophils in absolute numbers, you don't need this calculation.
Monitor for fever (Febrile Neutropenia), which is a medical emergency in patients with low ANC.
Always use the total White Blood Cell (WBC) count from the same lab report as the differential percentage.
