The Rapid Shallow Breathing Index (RSBI) is a simple bedside tool used in intensive care to predict whether a patient can be successfully weaned from mechanical ventilation. Patients who breathe rapidly and shallowly are less likely to tolerate spontaneous breathing.

Inaccurate results may occur if the patient is agitated or has significant pain.
Ensure tidal volume is entered in Liters (e.g., 500 mL = 0.5 L).
