Overview

The Serum-Ascites Albumin Gradient (SAAG) is a calculation used in medicine to help determine the cause of ascites (fluid buildup in the abdomen). It is superior to the older method of classifying fluid as transudate vs. exudate.

Pro Tips

If the patient is in shock, the SAAG may be falsely lowered.
Ensure the units for both albumin measurements are identical (usually g/dL).
Interpretation should also include the total protein in ascitic fluid to further narrow the differential.
