The directrix is a fixed line used in the definition of a conic section. For a parabola, every point on the curve is equidistant from a fixed point (the focus) and a fixed line (the directrix). The distance from the vertex to the focus is 'p', and the distance from the vertex to the directrix is also 'p'.
