What is a Noetherian Ring?

A Noetherian ring is a ring that satisfies the Ascending Chain Condition (ACC) on ideals. This means that every increasing sequence of ideals I₁ ⊆ I₂ ⊆ I₃ ... eventually stabilizes, i.e., there exists an N such that In = In+1 for all n ≥ N. Equivalent definitions include: every ideal is finitely generated.
