Heinz Body Anemia

Onions and garlic contain N-propyl disulfide. This compound damages the hemoglobin in your dog's red blood cells, causing them to clump into 'Heinz bodies'. These cells are then destroyed by the dog's own spleen, leading to life-threatening anemia. Unlike chocolate, this effect is cumulative and can take several days to become fully apparent.

Check Baby Food: Many baby foods contain onion powder for flavor—never give these to dogs.
Cooking doesn't help: The toxic compounds are Heat-Stable and remain dangerous even after boiling or frying.
Watch for Pale Gums: If your dog's gums change from pink to white or muddy-yellow, they need a blood transfusion.
Garlic Potency: While some people use tiny amounts of garlic for flea control (controversial), larger amounts are unequivocally toxic.
