Overview

A fence is only as strong as its foundation. The general rule of thumb is that at least 1/3 of the total post length should be below ground. For residential fences, this usually means digging 2 to 3 feet (60-90cm) deep. This provides the leverage needed to resist wind loads and prevents the soil from yielding against the post's base.

Pro Tips

Widen or 'bell' the bottom of the hole to create a more stable base and further prevent frost heave.
Add 3-4 inches (8-10cm) of gravel at the bottom of the hole before the post and concrete to allow for drainage and prevent rot.
For gate posts, always increase the hole diameter by 50% to handle the constant movement and dynamic weight of the gate.
