BMI vs. BCS

While BMI (Body Mass Index) is a helpful ratio, veterinarians primarily use the Body Condition Score (BCS). This is a 1-9 scale based on visual assessment and the 'rib test'. A dog in ideal condition should have an observable waist (from above) and ribs that are easily felt but not seen.

The Rib Test: You should be able to feel each individual rib with a light touch, like the back of your hand.
Tummy Tuck: When viewed from the side, the abdomen should slope upwards from the end of the rib cage.
Breed Variation: Sighthounds (Greyhounds, Whippets) naturally have lower BMIs, while Bulldogs have much higher ones.
