Calculating the volume of your fish tank is the first step in successful fish keeping. It determines which fish you can keep, the size of your heater, and how much medication or water conditioner to add. Remember that decor, gravel, and equipment will displace some of the water, so actual water volume is usually 10-15% less than the empty tank volume.
