Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) represents the average time that wastewater remains in a treatment reactor or tank. It determines how long microorganisms have to break down organic matter and pollutants. HRT is crucial for bioreactor design as it directly affects treatment efficiency, biomass concentration, and process stability. Too short HRT leads to biomass washout; too long HRT requires larger, more expensive tanks.

The standard formula is HRT = V / Q, where V is tank volume and Q is the influent flow rate.
Don't confuse HRT with SRT (Sludge Retention Time). HRT is for the liquid, while SRT is for the solids/biomass.
If you decrease the volume or increase the flow rate, the retention time decreases proportionately.
For biological reactors, increasing the temperature often allows you to decrease the HRT because reactions happen faster.
In reality, 'Short Circuiting' can occur where some water exits much faster than the calculated average HRT.
