Percent ionic character describes the degree to which a chemical bond exhibits ionic behavior. No bond between different elements is 100% ionic or 100% covalent; rather, bonds exist on a spectrum determined by the electronegativity difference (Δχ). If atoms have high Δχ, electrons spend significantly more time around the more electronegative atom, creating an 'ionic' property.
