Wall framing serves as the primary structural skeleton for residential and commercial buildings. Vertical studs are spaced regularly to provide a surface for wall finishes (like drywall) while carrying vertical loads. Horizontal 'plates' at the top and bottom tie the structure together.

Pro Tips

Add two extra studs for every corner or t-intersection in your wall layout to provide nailing surfaces for both sides.
In non-load-bearing walls, 24-inch (60 cm) spacing is often allowed, which reduces material costs and improves insulation efficiency (Advanced Framing).
