Overview
The Gorlin formula is the gold standard for calculating cardiac valve areas (Mitral or Aortic) during invasive cardiac catheterization. It relates the flow across the valve to the pressure gradient across it.

For Aortic valve, use the Systolic Ejection Period (SEP) as the filling period.
For Mitral valve, use the Diastolic Filling Period (DFP) as the filling period.
The formula is flow-dependent; inaccurate CO measurements will results in an inaccurate valve area.
