Unlike a circle, whose circumference is simply 2πr, an ellipse's perimeter cannot be expressed in terms of elementary functions. It requires 'Elliptic Integrals of the Second Kind'. Because these are difficult to solve exactly, mathematicians have developed many clever approximations. The most famous and accurate simple approximation was created by the self-taught genius Srinivasa Ramanujan.
