Relative error is a measure of the uncertainty of a measurement compared to the size of the measurement itself. While absolute error tells you the magnitude of the mistake, relative error tells you how significant that mistake is. For example, a 1-meter error in measuring a room is huge, but a 1-meter error in measuring the distance to the moon is negligible.
