About this calculator
Overview
Vinyl fencing is installed as a modular system using precision-engineered panels and hollow posts. Because the panels are pre-manufactured to specific widths (usually 6ft or 8ft), post-placement must be exact to within 1/4 inch. This calculator helps you determine the number of full spans required and the total post inventory, including extra end-posts for gates.

Pro Tips
If your total length isn't perfectly divisible by the panel width, you will need to cut one panel to size; always round your panel count up.
For every gate, you technically need two 'Gate Posts' which are often thicker or reinforced compared to standard 'Line Posts'.
Check your local frost line depth; vinyl posts should be buried below this level (usually 30-42 inches) to prevent 'heaving' in winter.

Fun Facts
"Standard vinyl privacy panels are most commonly available in 8-foot (2.44m) widths, while picket styles are often 6-foot (1.83m)."
"Vinyl posts typically utilize 'internal stiffeners' (aluminum or steel inserts) for gate and corner sections to handle the extra torque."
"Most premium vinyl systems are 'routed', meaning the horizontal rails snap into pre-cut holes in the posts without the need for brackets."
