Overview

Value Added Tax (VAT) is an indirect tax on the consumption of goods and services. It is collected at each stage of the supply chain but is ultimately borne by the final consumer. In some regions, this is known as GST (Goods and Services Tax). While adding tax is a simple multiplication, extracting tax requires dividing by the 'growth factor' to separate the original principal from the tax component.

What is the difference between Net and Gross?: Net is the price of a good or service before tax is added. Gross is the final price paid by the consumer, which includes the net amount plus the tax amount.
How do I reverse-calculate tax?: To remove 20% tax from a $120 total, you don't subtract 20% of $120 ($24). You divide $120 by 1.20, which gives you $100. The tax is $20.
Which countries use VAT?: Over 170 countries use VAT, including almost all of Europe. The United States is a notable exception, using a Sales Tax system that is applied only at the point of sale.
